US Patent Office Rejects Apple's 'Pinch To Zoom' Patent
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has reportedly rejected Apple's 'pinch to zoom' patent which plays a central role in the company's patent infringement case against Samsung.
As a result, Samsung Electronics filed a petition in the US District court requesting that all alleged infringement against Apple's pinch to zoom patent be tossed out, citing the USPTO's decision to reject all 21 claims through a final office action. Apple had charged Samsung with violating this patent (along with others) and awarded Apple with $1.05 billion in damages. The jury awarded damages to Apple with regard to all but two products found to infringe the '915 patent, Samsung said in its filing.

Pegatron Worker Confirms Plastic Low Cost iPhone in Labor Report
The China Labor Watch has leaked confirmation of the plastic iPhone in a labor report that accuses Pegatron and Apple of numerous labor abuses.
Here is the excerpt from a worker describing 'A day in Pegatron'.
"The task on my assembly line is to assemble back covers. The assembling of other parts of the cell phone, including the final assembly into a finished product, is assigned to different production facilities, each facility partitioned off by heavy curtains so that workers in different departments are isolated from one other. Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple. The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slow paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedules."

Working conditions at Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron come under fire
According to an upcoming report from the China Labor Watch, Apple’s China-based manufacturing partner Pegatron has come under fire for worker conditions. The report outlines several claims which shed a negative light on Pegatron:
- Pegatron is claimed to be withholding worker IDs. This means that Pegatron employees are unable to work elsewhere because they lack proper identification.
- The company is also claimed to be providing “poor living conditions” with “30-minute waits to enter their production facility, tight living quarters, and packed cafeterias.” Cold showers and packed dorms are also noted.
- Workers are claimed to be working over 60 hours a week (Apple’s limit), while Apple’s June Supplier Responsibility paper points to a 46-hour work-week average for Pegatron employees.
- At a Pegatron subsidiary, employees are said to be provided gloves that do not sufficiently protect from the materials used to create metal backplates for the iPad.

Watch Steve Jobs Introduce WiFi to the Masses
Reddit brings to our attention an old video that some of you may not have seen -- Steve Jobs introducing Wi-Fi for the first time to the masses, becoming the first mainstream computer with wireless networking.
Jobs introduced the iBook G3 during a Keynote conference in 1999 and it became first consumer device to carry a Wi-Fi card. Wi-Fi was being introduced to the masses for the first time, and Jobs even demonstrated the wireless capabilities by using a Hula Hoop!
During this historic moment, Jobs claimed 'everyone' would jump on the 802.11 bandwagon in the next few months/years. "We're just going to be there first, and the best," Jobs said.
The video shows Jobs waking an iBook from sleep and browsing the web. The crowd was not aware that Jobs was wirelessly surfing the web until he picks up the iBook and walks around the stage while still opening webpages. He then swings a hula hoop around the iBook to show off wireless networking.

Viber App Hacked By Syrian Electronic Army
The group defaced the support site support.viber.com and posted a message acknowledging that "We weren't able to hack all Viber systems". They also alleged the service was designed for spying and tracking; however, there is no evidence to suggest this and the screenshots posted only contain device information that would be necessary for messaging app to retain.
The hackers did say that "Some backups were downloaded successfully" but it's unclear what or how much user information has been compromised.
Viber has since taken down it's site and is presumably working to address the hack. They responded with the following message.
